National Nurses Week is a full week to celebrate people who

positions. Where did it all start, though?
Step Back in History
All 50 states partake in National Nurses Week which begins
on May 6 and goes through May 12. May 12, Florence Nightingale’s birthday, has been
known as International Nurse Day since 1974. By 1978, New Jersey Governor, Brendon
Byrne, made May 6 as Nurses Day. By February of 1982, the American Nurses
Association Board of Directors recognized May 6 as National Nurses Day, which
was agreed upon by the U.S. Congress. On March 25, 1982, President Ronald
Reagan declared May 6, 1982, to be National Recognition Day for Nurses by
signing a proclamation.
Jump forward to 1990, and the ANA Board of Directors
recognized nurses for a whole week as National Nurses Week from May 6 through
May 12 of 1991. By 1993, the dates were set permanently to start in 1994 and
thereafter.

healthcare workers, patients would not get the same level of care that is
provided in hospitals and doctor’s offices. The news, healthcare workers, and
families share their gratitude for nurses during National Nurses Week. Even
Hallmark creates cards specifically made for nurses. There are a lot of
sacrifices that take place being a nurse from long hours and time away from
their families to help those in need. The celebrations have changed over the
course of time, but all the creative and scientific achievements have made a
